Buy a guitar that would be exciting to the person who will own it! If they dont like Pink then get the color they like Best. Also if it is a child your buying for make sure to buy a Youth Guitar and not a full size as a full size will be impossible for them to learn on.

For an acoustic guitar I would Highly suggest: Electronic Tuner,5 Pack Pics,Guitar Strap,Soft case to protect guitar, 2 pkgs of Acoustic Guitar Strings,Stringing Tool, and of course a book to help them learn!

Buying their first Guitar

I dont care how old they are it is never too early or too late to start someone on Guitar! Learning to play guitar is a musical journey that I wish my parents started me on at a young age. The path to learning is easier when you are younger but for any age it is very rewarding. The gift of Music is just an awesome thing for anyone who is touched by it and unfortunately most people sit on the sidelines when they could be playing and writing songs instead.

Is it better to learn from a book or by ear?

Those who learn by ear are just incredibly dedicated and often have an ear for music. I suggest to everyone to learn from a book in the beginning and then evolve as you go along. Choosing a book will be something you should take serious and consider how eaasy or hard the songs are. Beginner books are usually not filled with cool songs but rather common songs we learned when we were growing up. The bright side of this is because of the popularity of guitars there is much more choices of learning books that often come with cd's and even videos showing you how to play.

  • Should I buy an Electric or Acoustic? -I suggest you choose what would best excite you or whoever will be getting the guitar. An electric maybe easier to make cool sounds with but an acoustic will strengthen their fingers quicker. Also it maybe cheaper to get into an acoustic since you dont have to have an Amp to play.
  • How long will it take to learn? - Everybody learns at their own pace and until you buy a guitar you will not even have a clue. For me it has been an uphill battle but for my 13 year old son he has taken to the guitar like a blazing inferno. He has the magical ear that can pick out the notes out of any song where I have to use the book to learn. After you own a guitar for 2-3 months you will find out what you are capable of and what your hidden talents are.
  • Which guitar is easier to learn? - The one that you or the new musician is mostly interested in. If they have the passion to play then try to feed their passion to help them grow with whatever instrument they hunger for.
  • What are the hidden costs? - Possibly having to pay for guitar lessons down the road. Not all of us have the natural drive to play even though we all want to play. With proper lessons I can even teach my dog how to play. When you eventually learn, the rewards from playing will be well worth the time devoted and money invested.
